It’s officially November! If you are like me that means it’s officially socially acceptable to start decorating for Christmas! Even if you aren’t quite ready to deck the halls yet, November is a great time to get creative and build equity in your home with high impact DIY projects.
My husband and I recently decided to tackle our super out dated red brick and brass fireplace. Pinterest has tons of great resources on this topic and you can pick from lots of great ideas. I really wanted the fireplace to become a focal point in our family room so I knew I wanted to go with grey paint and a black fireplace insert. First we prepped the brick by scrubbing it with a mixture of hot water and Tri-sodium Phosphate (TSP) to make sure it was as clean as possible so the paint would stick. Next we used a water based primer (to let the brick breathe) and then added a few coats of latex based Sherwin Williams Iron Ore on top.
After weighing our options we also decided to invest in a gas insert for our previously wood burning fireplace. We went back and forth on this for awhile but with 3 kids and crazy busy schedules, we probably burned fires 2x all last winter. There is nothing better than snuggling up on a winter day with a cozy fire, book and coffee! We also wanted a secondary heat source as our home is all electric and lowering electric bills is a huge bonus! Our fireplace was installed by local business Buckeye Stoves and I couldn’t be happier with the end result! What do you guys think? Comment below and let me know what remodeling projects you will be tackling this Winter!
